Food & Nutrition

About

The department of Food and Nutrition is one of the best performing departments. It was appreciated in the last NAAC cycle when college got the A grade.

Activities

  • Department organizes talks by eminent persons like Ms. Doris Rittenschober (junior scientist at FAO) in 2016, Ms. Hitha Bhankaria (Marico Industries) in 2016 and Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala (Bariatric surgeon) in 2017.
  • Students participate in inter-collegiate competitions and win prizes in cooking, poster making, health message writing and short video making (2017 onwards).
  • Skill Development Course of BASIC BAKING is conducted to teach the girls skills in baking (2017 onwards)

Alliances

Department has a partnership with Indian Dietetic Association (2016) and Nutrition Society of India (2018) and the company Guardian Health Care (2019). We are also associated with Parle Novelty, Sanofi, Rite Bite and Innerbing since 2018.

Research

BI.Students are trained for research competitions and have won prizes at Urjita research paper competition of PN Doshi College; Guru Nanak College and MD Shah Mahila College in 2017 and 2018.

Dissemination of knowledge

Demonstrations of experts have been organized. Snacks by Ms. Meeta Bharwada (2019), Bread making by Chef Neha Nakhawa (2018) and Chocloate Making by Ms. Princy Shah (2017).

  • A seminar was organized on ‘Adolescent Health Issues: Nutritional Management’ in 2018. Eminent speakers were invited- Dr. Rajeshri Kelkar, Ms Naaznin Hussein, Ms Shilpa Joshi, Ms Sheryl Sallis and Ms Ruby Sound.
  • Workshop on Anthropometric Measurements was conducted for students (2018).
  • Visits are taken to Food Hall and Grand Hyatt (since 2017).

Bite Delite Teacher Chef Competition was held in 2016.

Environment and Entrepreneurship

  • Save water and manage waste initiative was started (2016 onwards). Department sensitizes students about saving water. Dry and wet waste is collected separately. The wet waste is further used for manure making.
  • Manure Making and Kitchen Garden (2018 and 2019): The manure made is used for growing plants in the kitchen garden. Tomatoes, green chillies, curry leaves and mint leaves are grown outside the lab.
  • Experimental learning is achieved by the Bite Delite practical where cooking and selling of snacks is done to get a first -hand experience of entrepreneurship (since 2013).

Community Care

  • Project Akshaya: Breakfast snack distribution for students (2019).
  • ADAPT is the school for disabled children at Bandra Reclamation. Every week a group of 5 students and 1 teacher go for extension activity. The students teach children about health hygiene, nutritious foods, activities of clay modeling, paper folding activity, colouring activity etc. (2017). Students visit the ICDS centres and conduct nutrition education activities (2018).
